Happy Birthday USA

6th December is the day when most shops close and people turn their TV´s on. It´s Finland´s Independence Day. The highlight of that day is watching the Independence Day Reception with my family. The president shakes hands with all the quests and we would try to pick the best outfit. We did that more when I was younger though.

In the United States of America the 4th of July is a lot bigger. The citizens go out on the streets to watch the huge Independence Day Parade. Some are dressed in blue, white and red and some have decorated their whole houses with flags. Grilling is important too. Of course some are more into celebrating their country that others, as in Finland too.

6. joulukuuta on se päivä, jolloin suurin osa kaupoista sulkee ovensa ja suomalaiset käynnistävät televisionsa. Silloin on Suomen itsenäisyyspäivä. Kohokohtana on itsenäisyyspäivän vastaanoton katsominen perheen kanssa. Katsomme, kun presidentti kättelee vieraita ja yritämme valita parhaan juhla-asun. Tätä teimme kylläkin enemmän kun olin nuorempi.

Yhdysvalloissa itsenäisyyspäivää, 4. kesäkuuta, juhlistetaan suuremmin. Kadut täyttyvät itsenäisyyspäivän paraatia katsovista ihmisistä. Jotkut pukeutuvat siniseen, valkoiseen ja punaiseen ja toiset koristelevat koko talonsa samanvärisillä lipuilla. Grillaaminen kuuluu myös päivän ohjelmaan, tätä teimme omankin isäntäperheeni kanssa. Tietysti kaikki juhlivat maansa itsenäisyyttä eri tavoin, toiset enemmän ja toiset vähemmän, aivan kuin Suomessakin.

On the 5th July we visited the White House. Before going there I was told we´re not going to see much but I was still expecting more than what we really saw. We waited outside for about 30 minutes in the rain. When we finally got inside we just walked around for a bit and suddenly we had seen it all. It was beautiful of course but also not that much to see. 

Kesäkuun 5. päivänä pääsimme vierailulle Valkoiseen taloon. Ennen vierailua olin kuullut, ettei kierros tule olemaan kovin pitkä tai ihmeellinen, mutta odotin silti enemmän kuin oikeasti näimme. Seisoimme sateessa 30 minuuttia ennen kuin pääsimme edes turvatarkastukseen asti. Kun pääsimme sisälle kävelimme hetken ja pian huomasimmekin jo, että olimme uloskäynnillä. Kaikki näkemämme oli todella kaunista, mutta nähtävää ei ollut kovin paljon.
